The Timanfaya National Park is one of the places that you will surely consider as a must-see in Lanzarote. It is a park composed by 25 volcanoes that have not erupted since 1824, but there is still a volcanic activity.

It is the third most visited National Park in Spain, behind the Teide and the Picos de Europa. And, of course, it is one of the must-see in Lanzarote. You must discover Montañas del Fuego, Montaña Rajada or la Caldera del Corazoncillo!

When arriving to the Mountains of Fire in Lanzarote you will be amazed by the landscape you have in front of you. You won’t be able to distinguish whether you are in Lanzarote or in the moon. Its lifeless ground is due to the terrible eruption that devastated the southern zone of the island in 1730 and turned into the park.

The International Museum of Modern Art in Lanzarote is located in San José Castle, close to the area of Puerto Naos and Arrecife. The castle was built in the 18th century and served as a defense to the Spanish Empire during that time.

After that, it was abandoned for nearly a century. Years later, in 1976, Cesar Manrique convinced to the authorities of Lanzarote to renovate the castle and turn it into a Museum of Fine Arts.

The beginning of the museum was related to Picasso, Tàpies, Mirò … And today it is one of the most important cultural centers of the island.

The Castle was enlarged and its restaurant, where Manrique portrayed all his art, is considered as one of the most valued places of the complex.

The Jameos del Agua are the result of the ideas of César Manrique shaped on the volcanic nature of Lanzarote. The Jameos del Agua are located inside the volcanic tunnel created by the eruption of La Corona Vulcano.

The natural complex is divided into Jameo Grande (Big Jameo), Jameo Chico (Small Jameo) and Jameo de la Cazuela. They are three different openings of land, each one with its special features.

The water runs through the jameos giving the place a special interest. The blind albino cave crab lives within the water mixing lagoon and sea, a unique specie in the world. It is very small, blind and albino, only found in this place. It is very sensitive to rust, so it is strictly forbidden to throw coins into the water of the jameos.

If you love gardens and particularly the cactus, you will enjoy the Cactus Garden in Lanzarote. This garden houses more than 10 thousand cactus specimens, more than a thousand different species. It is located in Teguise, in the village of Guatiza, in the northern part of the island.

The Cactus Garden is the work of Cesar Manrique and it is built on an old quarry. Its interior remembers what could be an amphitheater that serves as a base for the vast population of cactuses. Definitely it is a must-see in Lanzarote.

This cave has this peculiar name thanks to a family with great purchasing power in the island who lived during the attacks of pirates and corsairs. The people of Lanzarote used the cave as a place of refuge for the corsairs. Like Los Jameos del Agua, it is a volcanic tube that was formed five thousand years ago, after the eruption La Corona’s volcano eruption. It is an amazing 7-kilometer formation under fossilized lava that flows into the sea and gets into the Tunnel of Atlantis along 1500 meters. At the closest part to the sea you will find the famous Jameos del Agua.

“Casa Amarilla” is the name chosen for a house located in Leon street and the Arrecife’s Castle, also used in the past as the Cabildo (Council) of Lanzarote’s seat. The house is an architectural work from the 1920s and now it houses temporary exhibitions.

It is a unique place declared a place of Cultural Interest in 2002 and has completed its rehabilitation in 2014.

The Mirador del Río is also a work of Cesar Manrique, upward 500 meters from the Earth’s surface. El Monumento al Campesino is a work of Cesar Manrique in Lanzarote. The artist was in charge of restoring the farmhouse that makes up the monument and serves to honor the peasants of the place and also La Geria, a unique place in the world with a volcanic landscape for the vine planting and from where the best agricultural products of the island are made.

In the Monumento al Campesino you will also find a restaurant where you can taste the best gastronomic offer of the island, like the fesh fish, Canarian potatoes, sancocho, and sweets.

Lanzarote and the Canary Islands have been targeted by pirates throughout the history. Since they became part of the Spanish Empire, pirates and corsairs sailed along its waters trying to get the best booty.
