One pound is divided into 100 pence (like the euro and cents) and there is also a variation of notes, as in the Euro. The notes are £5, £10, £20 and £50 and 100 pounds. It is similar for coins. Today’s coins are 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, £1 and £2.

Can I pay with credit card in London?

London is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and as such, the payment system by credit card is more than established. You can pay by credit card almost anywhere, avoiding the need to carry cash.

Remember to check with your bank before leaving, what will be the commission charged to your card for any purchase in London. According to the banking institution, it could vary. But maybe is better for you to pay everything by credit card and don’t carry any cash.

Where can I exchange pounds to euros?

If possible, you can exchange money at any bank, at the airport (both Spanish and London) and also in exchange houses and hotels in London. Don’t worry if you arrive to London without any cash and you need it because you can get it without problem.

Check with your bank the charge for exchanging cash. If you are not interested, you can always exchange money in London.

Another option is withdrawing money directly from a London ATM. The ATMs have a commission of 4%, with a minimum of 2 – 4 euros, so try to withdraw large quantities of cash at a time.

How much money should I bring to London? Required budget in the city.

As always it is really difficult to calculate how much money to bring to a city, but probably London will become very expensive for you. If you are traveling from Spain, you will find the prices considerably higher than in your city, so better have enough money with you.

To give you an idea, a London coffee is up 3 pounds (3.5 euros). In Madrid they charge you a lot in some of the most important places of the city, but usually the price is around 1,20 euros.

London has plenty of fast food restaurants in which you can save money having lunch or dinner, as well as some street stalls from markets such as Camden Town, but usually you will spend around 25 euros for having lunch without alcohol. Pints of beer are around 6 euros.

Public transportation is more expensive than in Spain. A metro ticket is around 5 euros and a half, so it would be interesting to check different options to save on transportation in London before traveling to the city.

And if you want to take a taxi from the airport, try to save enough money! One taxi which takes you to a close distance is around 80 euros, and not 35 euros, the price in Madrid.

National Gallery, the most important art collection in London

The view down our beautiful Barry Rooms, with 'Whistlejacket' painted by George Stubbs in the distance. Find out a little more about the history of our building below: In 1831 Parliament agreed to construct a building for the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square. There had been lengthy discussion about the best site for the Gallery, and Trafalgar Square was eventually chosen as it was considered to be at the very centre of London. The new building finally opened in 1838. In 1869 the architect E.M. Barry was asked to submit designs for rebuilding the entire Gallery at Trafalgar Square. After much discussion, it was decided that the existing building should remain, and a new wing should be added – the Barry Rooms. This was completed in 1876, and added seven new exhibition rooms at the east end, including the impressive dome.
